Cha Biotech said Monday that its US subsidiary Matica Biotechnology has teamed up with Bondwell Technologies, a Texas-headquartered biotechnology company, to accelerate the development and commercialization of next-generation protein-based materials.
Under the partnership, Matica Bio will provide process optimization services for Bondwell, which focuses on developing protein technologies for applications in bioprocessing and advanced life sciences.
According to Matica Bio, Bondwell is working on a proprietary protein-based biomaterial platform that harnesses proteins’ natural binding and self-assembly properties, with plans to apply the technology across pharmaceuticals, environmental solutions and energy.
Matica Bio said it will leverage its process development expertise accumulated through its experience in cell and gene therapies to help establish more efficient production processes for Bondwell’s protein materials.
The collaboration is expected to broaden Matica Bio’s process development capabilities into recombinant proteins while helping Bondwell bring its materials to market sooner.
The partnership is part of Matica Bio’s broader push to build a biotechnology collaboration network in Texas, allowing local biotech companies and research institutions to tap global-level development capabilities without looking outside the state.
Cha Biotech established Matica Bio as part of its push into the US cell and gene therapy contract development and manufacturing organization market. In 2022, the company completed construction of a CGT CDMO facility in College Station, becoming the only Korean company at the time to establish such a facility in Texas.
